Unexpected Guidance and Inspiration

Not all of our musical lessons come from our teachers. The world around us can offer useful and timely messages if we pay attention: the hawk's flight teaches us flow and conservation of energy; the wildflower growing from a crack in the sidewalk teaches us persistence; and a child's silly dance teaches us that music is sometimes fun and goofy.

A lesson came to me recently from a conversation with my father about harmonica playing. He is 94 years old and suffers from dementia, yet he still pursues this life-long passion. On learning and playing music:

"If I can hear it completely in my mind, I can play it." He went on to say, "I suppose it could be written out, but that would just get in the way..."

Thanks for the lesson Dad.

Wishing you unexpected guidance and inspiration...
